The Full Story
From a Backyard Coop to a Real Business
Jaxon was fourteen when he talked his parents into letting him build a small chicken coop in their backyard. He paid for the lumber himself with money saved from mowing neighbors' lawns. By the end of his first summer, he had twelve hens and more eggs than the family could ever eat — so he started selling the surplus to coworkers of his dad's at $4 a dozen.
The demand surprised everyone, including Jaxon. Within a year he had reinvested every dollar of profit, expanding to 80 hens on a half-acre lease from a neighboring family. He spent weekends reading everything he could find about pasture rotation, feed blends, and natural pest control — putting it into practice on school nights before sunrise.
By the time he turned 17, Brown's Best Poultry had its first commercial refrigerator, a secondhand delivery van, and a waiting list for weekly egg subscriptions. Two local chefs had begun sourcing his heritage birds for their menus, crediting the distinct, rich flavor of pasture-raised poultry raised without shortcuts.
"I never thought of it as a business at first — it was just something I loved doing. The business part kind of snuck up on me." — Jaxon Brown, interview with the Athens Messenger, March 2024
Jaxon graduated from Millfield High School in June 2024, turning down a partial scholarship to pursue farming full time. He is currently working toward USDA organic certification and plans to add a small processing facility by end of 2025.
